Bob Eder in his Study for the Series 6 Exam discusses Share Classes of Mutual Funds in detail. Here is an example of Bob Eder's treatment:
"Share Classes (3.2)
Many mutual fund families (i.e.,
sponsored by the same organization) may have several different classes of
shares, all invested in the same portfolio. Often, it is difficult for a client
to come to a decision about which share class to purchase. Why? Because the
different share classes have different sales charges and different annual
expenses.
"Class A Shares
"Front End Load
"These shares carry a front-end
load. An investor pays sales charges up front upon purchase. For example, XYZ
Fund charges a sales charge of 5.75 percent when a person purchases shares.
Additionally, Class A shares, like other share classes, will charge, for
example, a total annual expense ratio, such as 1.25 percent."
